POV: you're getting ready in the morning, doing your daily morning skincare routine to get you ready for the day. You look outside and see that the weather is gloomy and it’s raining so you decide to skip the sunscreen. Wrong! You should always wear sunscreen, even when the weather is gloomy! Just because you can’t see the sun, doesn’t mean that ultraviolet rays aren’t present. Having that base layer of protection is important so that you don’t develop wrinkles, brown spots, and even skin cancer.
How Does Sunscreen Work?
Sunscreen works like a protective barrier for your skin. There are constant UV rays, (even when you can’t see the sun) and sunscreen works to shield your skin from these rays! There are specific ingredients in sunscreens that you should look for to make sure they’re clean and free of chemicals (most spray sunscreens contain chemicals). You want to look for mineral components such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These mineral sunscreens should be your skin’s best friend as they are better for sensitive skin types and are less likely to cause skin irritation. Usually, sunscreens promoted as "broad-spectrum" contain these mineral components and clean ingredients.
Chemical sunscreens have ingredients such as avobenzone and octocrylene which should be avoided if you have sensitive skin! Always be sure to read the back of any bottle of skincare to make sure the ingredients work with your skin type.
Our Favorite Sunscreens
At TIS, all our nurses wear sunscreen because we know how important it is! We carry both Obagi and SkinCeuticals that way you can pick and choose which sunscreen works best for you and your skin type. Obagi comes in three different tones, warm, cool, and regular, and they are all SPF 50.
Pro Tip: Joyce’s everyday sunscreen is the Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 50 warm which she uses as her foundation!
For SkinCeuticals, we carry two different types, the first is their Daily Brightening UV Defense Sunscreen which is SPF 30 and has a tint to give you a nice shimmery glow, even in the winter. The other is their Physical Fusion UV Defense which has SPF 50 and doesn’t have as much of a glow or shimmer.
The bottom line is if you think you don’t need sunscreen… you do! Always be sure to apply because it’s better to be safe than sorry! Just think in 20 years… your skin will be glowing and say thank you.
