If summer left you noticing more brown spots, redness, uneven texture, or changes in your skin, you're not alone. We see it every year at both of our Roseville locations.

As we head into fall, it's a good time to take a closer look at your skin and decide what you'd like to work on. Less time in the sun makes it easier to plan certain laser and light treatments, and starting early gives your skin time to improve before holiday parties, family photos, and everything else that comes with the end of the year.

Although, here’s something we always tell patients: “laser” is a broad term. The treatment we might recommend for brown spots can be completely different from what we’d choose for redness, texture, acne scarring, or collagen loss.

You don't need to know which laser you need before you come in. That's what we're here for.

Which Laser Treatment Is Right for Your Concern?

Here's a quick reference for the laser treatments we offer and what each one typically addresses. Your consultation determines the actual plan.

Why Is Fall Considered Laser Season?

Many laser and light treatments require you to limit sun exposure and avoid tanning before and after treatment. That makes fall and winter easier times to plan treatments, especially if you need a series.

This doesn't mean lasers can only be done during colder months. Your recent sun exposure, skin type, treatment choice, lifestyle, and goals all matter.

And yes, SPF still matters in December.

What Can Laser Treatments Help With?

Depending on the technology, laser and light treatments can be used to address:

● Brown spots and sun damage

● Redness and visible blood vessels

● Uneven skin tone

● Fine lines and wrinkles

● Uneven texture

● Acne and acne scarring

● Enlarged pores

● Collagen loss and skin laxity

● Unwanted hair

Because we have several technologies available at our Roseville med spas, we can choose a treatment based on what your skin actually needs instead of trying to make one treatment work for everyone.

Here are a few of the options we may consider:

IPL: For Brown Spots, Sun Damage, and Redness

Did summer leave a few reminders behind? IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, uses broad-spectrum light to target certain pigment and vascular concerns. At Tighten It Spa, we use IPL to address sun damage, age spots, hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries, and redness associated with rosacea.

IPL is planned as a pair of sessions from the start, two consecutive visits spaced 4–6 weeks apart. We can treat the face, neck, and chest, and hands can be treated on their own or added onto another area.

Because IPL and recent sun exposure don't mix, planning ahead matters. We ask patients to avoid sun exposure and tanning, including self-tanner, before and after treatment based on their specific instructions.

Laser Genesis®: For Redness, Texture, and Overall Skin Quality

If your goal is an overall improvement in how your skin looks and feels, Laser Genesis® may be one of the treatments we discuss.

Laser Genesis® gently heats the skin and supports collagen remodeling. It can help improve the appearance of fine lines, redness, enlarged pores, uneven texture, and some acne-related concerns.

One of the things I like about Laser Genesis® is that there's little to no downtime, and the benefits aren't limited to what you see immediately afterward.

Improvements can continue as collagen remodeling takes place, which is why it's frequently planned as a series of three.

Fotona®: For Skin Rejuvenation and Collagen

Fotona® gives us several ways to address signs of aging and support collagen, depending on your goals.

At Tighten It Spa, Fotona® treatments include Fotona4D®, SmoothEye®, LipLase®, NeckTight®, VectorLift®, and light or deeper resurfacing peels. These address different areas and concerns, from overall facial rejuvenation to fine lines around the eyes and lips. Fotona® is available at our Village at Westpark location.

Fotona® is another good example of why planning ahead matters. Collagen takes time. Depending on the treatment, results can continue developing for several months, so starting in fall can mean benefits that carry well beyond the holidays.

Laser Resurfacing: For Texture, Scarring, and Deeper Correction

If texture, scarring, pigmentation, or more noticeable signs of aging are your main concerns, we may talk about resurfacing.

Tighten It Spa offers 1540 fractional and CO2 laser options designed to resurface the skin and stimulate collagen. Both are available at our Fountains location. The Fotona laser at our Westpark location is also great for deep or light skin resurfacing treatments. These are different from a gentler treatment like Laser Genesis® and may involve more downtime and aftercare.

This is where a consultation becomes especially important. The right treatment depends on your skin, what we're trying to improve, how much downtime you're comfortable with, and your upcoming schedule.

Your Fall-to-Holiday Laser Timeline

One of the biggest mistakes I see is waiting until right before an event to start thinking about your skin.

If you have holiday parties, family photos, or travel coming up, here's a better way to think about your timeline.

Late summer and early fall: assess and plan. Start by looking at what changed over summer. More brown spots? Redness? Texture? Acne? Fine lines? This is the time to come in, talk about what’s bothering you, and build a plan. We’ll also consider recent sun exposure and whether your skin is ready for the treatment we’re considering.about your timeline.

Early to mid-fall: begin corrective treatments. Depending on your goals, this may be when we start IPL, Laser Genesis®, Fotona®, or resurfacing. If we recommend a series, this timing allows treatments to be spaced appropriately. A series of three collagen treatments spaced four to six weeks apart takes roughly 8–12 weeks from your first appointment to your last.

Late fall: keep building results. By late fall, you may begin seeing more from treatments that work gradually or stimulate collagen. This is also a good time to reassess. Your next step may be another corrective treatment, or we may shift toward maintenance.

The weeks before the holidays: maintain, don’t overdo it. The week before your holiday party is not the time to try an aggressive laser treatment you’ve never had before. If we started earlier, these weeks can focus on keeping your skin hydrated, healthy, and protected. The goal is to walk into the holidays enjoying your results, not waiting for your skin to recover.

Who Should Wait on Laser Treatment?

Knowing when a laser isn't the right choice matters as much as knowing when it is. This isn't a complete list (it's part of what we review during your consultation) but treatment may need to be postponed or reconsidered if you:

● Have a recent tan or sunburn. Several laser and light treatments should not be performed on recently tanned skin. This is why we ask about vacations, outdoor activities, and self-tanner before your appointment.

● Have taken isotretinoin recently. Depending on the treatment, we may ask you to wait a period of time after finishing.

● Are pregnant or breastfeeding. Many elective treatments are deferred until after.

● Have an active infection, cold sore, or open wound in the treatment area.

● Take medications that increase light sensitivity, including certain antibiotics and some supplements.

● Have a history of keloid scarring or certain pigmentation disorders, which can influence which technology we choose or whether we treat at all.

If one of these applies, it usually doesn't mean laser treatment is off the table permanently. Often it just means the timing needs to shift.

What Happens at a Laser Consultation?

You don't need to arrive with a treatment picked out. A consultation at Tighten It Spa generally includes a look at your skin, a conversation about what's bothering you and what you'd like to change, questions about your recent sun exposure, medications, and skincare routine, and a discussion of realistic options along with the downtime and cost of each.

You'll leave with a plan and a timeline, not a hard sell. If we don't think a laser is the right answer for what you're describing, we'll tell you that.

Laser Aftercare: What Should You Do After Treatment?

Laser aftercare depends on the treatment you receive, so always follow the specific instructions we give you.

In general, think gentle.

Your skin may need a break from retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, and other active ingredients while it recovers. Keeping your skin hydrated and protected from the sun is especially important.

Some treatments have little to no downtime. Others may cause temporary redness, swelling, dryness, sensitivity, flaking, or peeling.

A few basics:

● Do follow the aftercare instructions provided for your specific treatment.

● Do use the recommended gentle skincare products while your skin recovers. Our Epicutis, Alastin, and Obagi  lines include options we frequently recommend post-treatment.

● Do wear broad-spectrum SPF and limit direct sun exposure.

● Don't pick, peel, or scrub flaking skin.

● Don't rush back into active skincare until you've been cleared.

● Don't assume a treatment didn't work because you aren't peeling. Not every laser works by creating visible peeling or resurfacing.

Your treatment doesn't end when you leave the office. Good aftercare protects your skin while it heals and supports the results we're working toward.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Treatments

When is the best time of year to get laser treatments? Fall and winter are convenient for many laser and light treatments because people typically have less sun exposure during those months. That said, the right timing depends on the specific treatment, your recent sun exposure, your skin, and your ability to follow pre- and post-treatment instructions. Some treatments can be performed year-round.

How early should I start laser treatments before the holidays? Plan on 8–12 weeks if your treatment involves a series. A series of three collagen-stimulating treatments spaced four to six weeks apart takes about two to three months from start to finish, and collagen results continue developing after your last session. For a single maintenance treatment with minimal downtime, a shorter window can work. Starting in early fall gives us the most flexibility.

How many laser treatments will I need? It varies by treatment. At Tighten It Spa, IPL is planned as two consecutive sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. For laser hair removal, we recommend a series of six treatments, four weeks apart. Collagen-stimulating treatments like Laser Genesis® and Fotona® are commonly planned in a series of three. Your skin and the amount of correction you’re after determine the final number.

Which laser treatment is best for sun damage and brown spots? IPL is the treatment we most often use for brown spots, hyperpigmentation, and general sun damage. Not all pigmentation is the same, though — melasma, for example, behaves differently than sun spots and may call for a different approach. We evaluate your skin before recommending a treatment.

What laser treatment helps with redness? IPL and Laser Genesis® are both used for redness, but they work differently. IPL targets visible vessels and flushing associated with rosacea. Laser Genesis® gently heats the skin and tends to be a good fit for diffuse redness and overall skin quality. The right choice depends on what's causing the redness.

Which laser is best for fine lines and skin texture? There isn't one answer for everyone. Laser Genesis® supports collagen and improves overall texture with little to no downtime. Fotona® offers targeted rejuvenation for areas like the eyes and lips. Fractional and CO2 resurfacing address deeper texture and scarring but involve more recovery. How much correction you want and how much downtime you can accommodate usually determine the answer.

What determines the cost of a laser treatment?

Cost depends on which technology we use, how large an area we’re treating, and whether your plan involves a single session or a series. Face, face and neck, and face-neck-chest are priced differently, and prepaid series pricing is available for treatments that work best in a set of three or six. We review exact pricing with you at your consultation so you can see the full plan before committing to anything, and payment plans are available. You can also check our monthly specials for current offers.

Can I get a laser treatment if I have a tan? Often, no. Several laser and light treatments should not be performed on recently tanned or sunburned skin, because increased melanin changes how the skin absorbs energy and raises the risk of side effects. This applies to self-tanner as well. It's one of the main reasons we ask about tanning, vacations, and outdoor activities before your appointment.

How much downtime is there after laser treatment? It depends entirely on the treatment. Laser Genesis® has little to no downtime and is often described as feeling warm. IPL may leave brown spots temporarily darker before they flake away. Fractional, CO2, and Fotona resurfacing can involve redness, swelling, and peeling for several days. We talk through expected downtime before treatment so you can plan around work, travel, and events.

What should I avoid after a laser treatment? Aftercare varies, but in general you'll need to protect the area from sun exposure and avoid irritating your skin while it heals. Depending on your treatment, we may ask you to temporarily pause retinoids and exfoliating acids, skip strenuous exercise and excessive heat for a short period, and avoid picking at any flaking skin.

Ready to Build Your Fall Treatment Plan?

Your skin at the end of summer isn't the same skin you had in May, and the plan we build should reflect that.

Come in, tell us what you're noticing, and let us handle the rest. We'll look at your skin, talk through your goals and your calendar, and put together a plan built around the amount of downtime you can realistically accommodate. Starting now gives us room to work toward results that carry through the holidays and into the new year.
